Your hosts at The Brick Bed and Breakfast are Pennie and Gary Espeland.Pennie and Gary arrived in Laramie in l970 -- Pennie as a UW Freshman from the western Wyoming community of Big Piney, and Gary as UW Director of Student Activities from LaCrosse, Wisconsin. They met in l976 while volunteering for the Laramie Jubilee Days celebration. Married in l977, they have three grown children and a granddaughter Abby Rose. Active in the Real Estate profession since l977, the Espelands have had an opportunity to live in and renovate a variety of homes. The restoration of The Brick has been a true labor of love. In l979 Gary purchased the l905 structure for his real estate office. In l999, the Espelands restored the two story brick building back to a family home. The home has a rich history and the Espelands have strived to retain the integrity and historical value of the home. A Wyoming native, Pennie has a deep respect for the history of Wyoming and the Laramie area. Her grandmother homesteaded in Big Piney and her interest in history and the collected items and art displayed in The Brick represent a proud family heritage. Pennie earned her BA in Communication from the University of Wyoming in 2008 (she was on the 38 year plan!) She currently serves as a Vice President of the Downtown Laramie Business Association, is the State Historian for the Wyoming Chapter of P.E.O., a member of the Laramie Valley Lodging Assoc., a 2007 Graduate of Leadership Wyoming, and active in numerous community events and projects. Gary, a full blooded Norwegian, also shares his proud Norwegian heritage. Family heirlooms in The Brick all have rich heritage and stories. Gary earned his Master Degree in Student Personnel at University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. He is a member of the Albany County Tourism Board and has been active in Wyoming Senior Olympics, a volunteer on the Main Street Promotions committee, Member of the Citizen Board of Directors for American National Bank. He is an avid fisherman, hunter, and skier and plays a mean game of table tennis! The Espelands are members of the Cowboy Joe Club and are avid UW sports fans. And you can bet the experiences and years of insight into Laramie and Wyoming will add lively conversation at the breakfast table! |
